MOON TOWNSHIP– The Robert Morris Colonials took on the Fresno State Bulldogs Tuesday in a non-conference matchup. This is the first time that these two teams have met.

It looked like it was going to be a long day for the Colonials (2-0) as the Bulldogs (1-2) struck first just 30 seconds into the game, then added another goal just one minute later. The Colonials would regain their composure and just rattle off goal after goal and as they rang up five-straight goals in the game after being down.

One of those early goals came from the person everyone was watching heading into action, Mackenzie Gandy. She scored the goal that opened up the scoring for the Colonials and became the all-time points leader at RMU, breaking Ashley Levering’s record of 179 set in 2009.

“It feels good to finally get it off my shoulders, It has been a long time coming for this,” she said. “I worked really hard for it and it feels good that I can make history especially with this team.”

After the scoring outburst, the colonials would add four more goals to their total to increase their lead to 9-3. Head coach Katrina Silva noted that the team’s slow start did not bring them down

“We got off to a slow start in the first half because this was our first time playing [Fresno State] but what I saw in this team is that we have heart and determination,” she said.

In the first half, Mackenzie Gandy had three goals, Kelsey Nolan added a pair of goals, and Katelyn Miller had seven saves.

The Colonials took command of the second half and rattled off three straight goals, looking to take control of the game as they almost had a double-digit lead.

Mackenzie would have made it a double-digit lead but a foul occurred before the goal, resulting in it being disallowed. The Bulldogs took full advantage of the no-goal call, springing back to life, coming back with four-straight goals to cut the lead to six.

The Colonials made a goalkeeper change as Jamie Keller came in the second half for Miller after giving up four-straight goals. RMU answered with two more goals of their own to extend the lead back to six. Mackenzie picked up another goal late to give her six goals in the game, as 12 different Colonials scored in the game.

Mackenzie Gandy spoke on the team’s hot start to the season.

“This 2-0 start is awesome for us, we are a young team, and to face a team for the first time and come out and play the way we did was great,” Gandy said. “I am excited for the rest of the season.”

Coach Silva also spoke about the team’s effort.

“We wanted to play fast, and when you play fast you tend to make mistakes,” she said. “We wanted to play our way, the Colonial way of lacrosse, and we did what we wanted to [out there].”

The Robert Morris University Colonials will face Kent State in their first MAC conference matchup on March 3 on the road in Kent, Ohio.
