MOON TOWNSHIP – Homecoming weekend is very busy here at Robert Morris University. On a overcasted Saturday, RMU men’s soccer (5-4-2) took on the Wright State Raiders (5-5-2) at the North Athletic Complex.
Both teams would be looking to secure a win after both coming off losses.
Although, both teams wouldn’t be able to share the victory. The Colonials would be crowned the victors at the end of the match, with the final score being 3-1. So while the clouds limited the sunlight, it didn’t stop the Colonials from shining.
“So, so pleased for our guys. They trained well this week. We prepared well. Just happy to see us get a really important result in the Horizon League,” said Head Coach Potter on today’s win.
The first half was a success for the Colonials as senior John Paul Mbuthia would put the Colonials up by one, thanks to an assist from freshman, Lucas Barsoee.
The second half was even better. Lucas Barsoee would continue his big day as he would score RMU’s second goal of the game. His second of the season. RMU’s last goal would come from Anass Hadran. His third of the season. This goal was assisted by Logan Gilley and Kai McLoughlin.
Although WSU found the back of the net multiple times, only one of them would count. It would be the last goal of the game by Cole Werthmuller. His eighth of the season.
Robert Morris outshot the Raiders in the first half 7 to 2. Both teams would have 5 shots in the second period. The Colonials had a total of 6 shots on target while the Raiders had 3. Potter thinks this is an aspect of their game that can always be improved:
“There’s always points to improve…we had six shots on goal, so you continue to want to create more and more opportunities to score goals, and obviously limit chances for the opponent.”
The Colonials have four games left of the season. Each of which being in the very tight Horizon League. Here’s Potter’s view on the final stretch of the season:
“Every Horizon League game is so difficult. So, it’s just day by day. We can improve this week, and coming up Green Bay is a great team, so we have to prepare well this week.”
Men’s soccer will be back in action next weekend, as they face Green Bay on Sunday, October 20. Kickoff is scheduled for noon.
