RMU, Detroit Mercy Rubber Match Suspended Due to Inclement Weather
March 17, 2023
MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. — With Detroit Mercy coming to Moon Township to face Robert Morris, the March weather became an issue with the three game series. After game three was already pushed back from a noon start to a 3:53 p.m. first pitch, the action between the Colonials and Titans was suspended due to inclement weather.
As soon as the first pitch was sent, the rain started to slowly come down. By the second inning, the cold rain turned into a steady downpour.
Detroit Mercy’s starting pitcher, Olivia Warrington began to struggle as she could not find control.
In the bottom half of the second, Warrington threw three wild pitches which brought Jess Matheny all the way around from first to score for the Colonials. Then, Warrington walked Avery Winchell to score Julia Ehrman.
The messy inning allowed Robert Morris to take a 4-3 lead. After a few discussions between the umpires and Detroit Mercy head coach Marc Gillis, the game was suspended following the end of the second inning.
The game will be resumed at a later time with that information still to be determined as this weekend continues to present cold and windy weather to the Pittsburgh region.
Game three of the home opening series for RMU was already a part of a reconfigured series impacted by the weather. What was originally supposed to be a Saturday doubleheader was moved to Thursday.
Robert Morris and Detroit Mercy split the doubleheader with the Colonials taking game one, 7-0, and then the Titans stole game two, 2-0.
