MOON TOWNSHIP – It was a beautiful afternoon for some fall football and some conference rivalry football too. Robert Morris (5-3, 3-0 NEC) was looking to continue their streak of winning as they were home to take on and old rival Saint Francis University (2-6, 0-4 NEC).
Robert Morris got on the board early and first with a 62-yard drive that took seven plays and ended with an Ethan Shine one-yard touchdown run. And from that point forward it was all Robert Morris on the scoreboard.
The game was not a high scoring game with the final score only being 17-0 in favor of RMU.
“Our performance was lackluster,” head coach Bernard Clark said. “It was a great defensive performance, with our offense sputtering a little bit that’s what you do. Last week our defense sputtered so we just pick each other up, it is a team effort.”
Even with just 17 points being scored the offense picked up over 300 yards of total offense. The offense for the Colonials didn’t get much momentum throughout the game as they would score and then have a few possessions with nothing going on.
The offense was still able to go out and get the job done when it counted the most.
“We missed some plays that we should’ve had,” coach Clark said. “Things didn’t go the way we wanted them to all the time, but we won the game and it is better to learn from a winning game than a losing game”.
In this game the defense was the story, the RMU defense posted another shutout this year making it two in the last three weeks. The Colonials are making it know that they can win these high offense powered games but also their defense can go out and get the job done.
Leading the way on the defensive side of the ball today was Jamar Shegog with a total of 10 tackles followed up by Keon Freeman and Joshua Darisme. RMU was also able to get the Quarterback today to put the pressure on, with just two sack they were able to make their presence felt. PK Ackah-Yensu had one sack for a loss of eight yards and Lucas Lambert and Tizlam Muhammad both combined for one sack.
“We knew it was going defensive battle going into this game,” Clark said. “The coaches did a great job at preparing these young men to rally around each other and win the football game.”
With this game being played against Saint Francis and the rivalry aspect that comes with it. The Colonials have defeated the Red Flash for the second time in as many years.
“Every time we play and NEC team it means a little more,” Clark said. “That is the great thing about coming back to this conference, we have those rivals, we have those competitive games, so we are always excited about play and NEC opponent.”
Robert Morris will be back in action next weekend for another NEC conference game. They will on be taking on Merrimack with kickoff set for noon.
