CORAOPOLIS, PA – The RMU Colonials (5-7-1) got shutout at home by the Mercyhurst Lakers (4-7-1) 2-0 on Friday at the RMU Island Sports Complex.
The Colonials had a subpar game offensively, as they attempted only 19 shots on goal throughout the whole game and were doubled in that category by the Lakers.
With nothing to show for on the scoreboard, the fans were not able to throw teddy bears onto the ice after a goal, yet they still did after the final buzzer sounded.
They still had some opportunities. The Colonials had three power play opportunities while committing zero penalties, but Mercyhurst was able to kill all three opportunities.
There was no scoring in the first period, although Mercyhurst broke the stalemate off a goal from Tristana Tatur. The Lakers’ Regina Metzler added a second goal in the third period to give Mercyhurst a little breathing room. Despite an official review on Metzler’s goal, the point stood.
Despite the loss, RMU had a strong defensive performance. The Colonials blocked 14 shots compared to the Lakers’ 10, and redshirt sophomore goalie Maggie Hatch had a strong performance saving 36 shots for a 94.7% save percentage.
The Colonials also pulled Hatch with four minutes to play in the third period. RMU did not score with the extra skater on the ice, but crucially did not give up any points with an empty net.
“The effort was there, the finish wasn’t,” head coach Logan Bittle said. “We hate giving away points at home in-league, but we need to get 1-2% better for tomorrow.”
“We have to get tougher in front of the net, but the attitude and positivity was there, we just need to get a little better for tomorrow.”
The RMU Colonials will take on the Mercyhurst Lakers again tomorrow at the RMU Island Sports Complex. Puck drops at 3 pm.
