February 23, 2022
MOON TOWNSHIP– Robert Morris women’s lacrosse started their first of many MAC Wednesday matinee games. The Colonials (1-2, 1-0 MAC) hosted Detroit Mercy (0-2, 0-1) and picked up their first win of the season as they defeated the Titans 17-9.
Coach Silva spoke on the team’s first win this season after the game.
“We were way more organized and dialed in and focused. We used a lot of people today,” Silva said. “We have gone from a superstar team to an everybody pitches in.”
RMU lacrosse has been having slow starts to their games this season, but not today. Jamie Keller started hot as she made back-to-back huge saves for the Colonials.
“Jamie came out hot,” Silva said. “She needed to have a good start, which she did.”
RMU gained control of the ball and went downfield, where Kelsey Nelson would open up the scoring flood gates.
Jenna Irwin, Jerica Obee, Gianna Anthony and Bailey Christianson each tallied one, while Detroit Mercy’s Taylor Cantelon was the Titans’ only response in the first quarter.
In the second quarter, RMU’s Julia Koterwas continued the goal scoring for RMU by picking up a hat-trick in those 15 minutes. Jerica Obee, Jenna Irwin and Maggie Boyle picked up goals to set the Colonials up by a spread of 11-2 before Detroit Mercy had a momentum surge where they scored three straight to send it to halftime down 11-5.
In the second half, Jenna Irwin picked up three more goals for a total of 5 on the day. Coach Silva was ecstatic about her performance.
“The kid is a stud,” she said. “She takes the draws, she wins ground balls and does great in transition, and she’s only a freshman. It’s nice to see a good kid have a great day.”
The Colonials went on to keep the game out of reach as Bailey Christianson, Colleen Tifft and Gianna Anthony each scored to bring home the 17-9 win.
The Colonials’ next game will be this Saturday at noon in Lewisburg PA to take on Bucknell.
