Robert Morris rally comes up short as they fall to Wright State
October 13, 2022
MOON TOWNSHIP — The Robert Morris women’s soccer team looked to get back in the win column Thursday afternoon against Wright State but fell by a score of 2-1.
The Colonials (7-4-4, 1-4-2 Horizon) looked to get the offense going after being shut out by Oakland on Sunday. However, it was Wright State (7-5-3, 4-1-3) that would strike first.
Wright State was aggressive to begin the game and kept the ball in Colonial territory for most of the first twenty minutes. This would be a theme, as the Raiders also possessed the ball for much of the start of the 2nd half.
Head coach Chris Shaw spoke postgame about the start of both halves.
“We had six freshmen in the lineup today,” Shaw said. “I think a lot of it is the learning curve of having a young team and trying to get used to the speed and pace of the Horizon League.”
Elise Canter had both goals for the Raiders in the 15th and the 55th minute, and both were assisted by Marcella Sizer.
Kayla Veloso-Lima got the Colonials on the board in the 63th minute after a corner kick found its way to her, and she delivered it past Jessika Seward, the Raiders goalkeeper.
Despite the loss, the Colonials gave themselves a chance until the very end, having two shots on goal from Malia Kearns go out top in the 81st minute and 86th minute.
Coach Shaw mentioned how pleased he was with the 2nd half effort.
“I thought the second half was a good half,” Shaw said. “We threw numbers forward, ended in a 3-3-4, and had a really good look right at the last minute. Disappointed with the result, but happy with the effort and intensity of the players that last 45 minutes.”
Shaw mentioned a few things the team may look to improve before their matchup in Indianapolis.
“We want to build out of the back and keep possession,” Shaw said. “We also want to play through the midfield. So much of that is speed of play and movement off the ball. With young players, it’s still something we’re trying to get better at.”
Their matchup against the Jaguars will be at 1pm on Sunday.
