It’s a fresh new semester here at RMU, and while students are getting back into the swing of things on campus, RMU Athletics didn’t miss a beat. From winning streaks to schedules, here’s what the student body can look forward to in the coming weeks and months ahead.
Men and Women’s Basketball teams look to extend impressive streaks
The RMU men’s and women’s basketball programs have been roaring as of late, and they will welcome students back with two big home matchups this week. The women’s team are riding a three game winning streak, which is the most in program has seen in four years.
Even more impressive has been the fact all three wins have been on the road against Youngstown, Oakland, and Detroit Mercy. A win against Youngstown meant the first win in Youngstown since 2006, and first road win for new head coach Chandler McCabe, somethings she’s gotten used to over the last few games. Another milestone has been the performances from the newbies, including Jennica Suggs, who won Horizon League Freshman of the week, the first to do so in nearly five years.
On the other side of the court, Andy Toole and his men are flying. His team are in the midst of a five game winning run, most recently completing the season sweep over last year’s March Madness Cinderella, Oakland. The Colonials also won three road games during this stretch. Performances from Kam Woods, Alvaro Folgueiras, and Amarion Dickerson have highlighted the run, with Woods also hitting a personal milestone of 1,000 points.
RMU women’s basketball will welcome Wright State to the UPMC Events Center Wednesday evening with tipoff scheduled for 7 PM. Meanwhile the Men’s team will host IU Indy at the same time on Thursday. Both with winning streaks on the line.
Men’s Hockey looks to turn poor form around in matchup against Canisius
Men’s hockey has only won one of their last 8 games. Following two major defeats at the hands of UMass and Arizona State, the Colonials returned to AHA play against Holy Cross. The Colonials would lose one and tie the other, picking up an extra point in the shootout.
They then would follow that up with a series split against RIT, before losing back to back home bouts with Army and the season finale against Canisius. Now they’ll look to halt the poor form against Mercyhurst, a team they’ve beat in overtime. 2 points against the Lakers will be integral if RMU wants to make up ground in the AHA standings.
The Colonials will need to continue to rely on Hobey Baker award nominees Michael Craig and Walter Zacher to keep putting up numbers. Currently, Craig leads the team in assists and Zacher leads the team in goals. Both sit tied second on the team for points with 17.
Hatch named on Goaltender of the Year Watch List
It’s been a rough season for Women’s Hockey so far, but recently there has been some happiness restored to the team.
After picking up one regulation win in twelve games this season, RMU has looked to right their wrongs and has picked up three wins in six games since. Part of their success recently has been due to the contributions of sophomore goalie Maggie Hatch.
Hatch was named Goaltender of the Week last week, and has now for the second consecutive season been watchlisted for the HCA Goaltender of the Year Watch List. The Ohio native has 680 saves and two shutouts this season. The Colonials will rely on Hatch a lot as they take on top ranked Penn State this weekend at the Island. Games are scheduled for 3 P.M. Friday and Saturday.
Softball releases 2025 Schedule
The 2025 RMU softball schedule was released last week. Last year, RMU made it to the Horizon League tournament as the fifth seed, where they upset top seeded Youngstown State and made it to the final 3.
This season, the Colonials will open up on the road for the Gardner Webb Tournament where they will also face Iona and Sacred Heart. The Colonials will open up Horizon League play against Oakland at home on March 14. Another exciting matchup will be when the Colonials welcome Pitt for part one of a home and home matchup on April 1.
A key homestand will begin on April 12 against Detroit Mercy. The team will also face Purdue Fort Wayne and Mercyhurst during that stretch. The Colonials will close their regular season in Bowling Green for a series on May 2 and 3. For the full schedule you can visit RMU Athletics.
