Robert Morris Taken Down by Wright State in Penultimate Game of the Season
November 11, 2022
MOON TOWNSHIP — Robert Morris (9-20, 2-15 Horizon) hosted as massive underdogs against the Horizon League top dogs themselves, the Wright State Raiders (25-3, 17-0).
The Colonials came out with fire in their eyes as they looked to topple the top team. The fire was not hot enough as the Raiders would make it 20 wins in a row as they swept the Colonials three sets to zero.
The Colonials got off to a quick start in the first set, which included a 3-1 lead thanks to solid teamwork on long points and a nice run of serves by Kaitlyn Brown. Abbey Ryan clobbered one straight down during a run, which tied the set up at 10 a piece.
Abby Ryan had a spectacular play later in the opening set in which she kicked the ball up to save it and got the kill, later to help RMU take a 21-20 lead. However, the Raiders overtook them and took the first set 25-22.
In the second set, it seemed every point was a tough battle, with Wright State just edging out, causing the Colonials to be down 9-2 early.
Although the Colonials held their own in the first set, the Raiders showed why they were undefeated in conference play, dominating on both ends. Wright State had a 14-4 run midway through the middle frame and won in the second set 25-12.
Annie Monaco started getting some time towards the end of the second set and into the third, and she ended up being a playmaker for the Colonials with a few kills and blocks.
The tide would never turn for RMU, and their penultimate match this season was finished in the third set with a score of 25-17.
The Colonials had a season-low .056 hit percentage on the evening.
Junior Abby Ryan led the team in kills for the Colonials with 12 and freshman Kaitlyn Brown led the team with 17 assists.
As for Wright State, Sam Ott and Seiler Hruska each led the team with seven kills as Katie Meyer had 30 assists for the Raiders.
The team will have senior night tomorrow as they will honor graduate student Alyssa Hudak as they host Northern Kentucky at 4 p.m.
