Rowing Seniors Give Final Goodbye at Last Home Meet in RMU Duals
April 1, 2023
On a sunny spring afternoon, the Robert Morris University rowing team celebrated its Senior Day at the Midge McPhail Boathouse as the Colonials took on cross city rivals Duquesne as well as George Mason in the RMU Duals. The Colonials were coming off of a scrimmage last time out against West Virginia.
First-year head coach Robert Weber spoke about the journey he and his team have been on this season.
“It’s my first year, so I haven’t seen much, but everyone has been through some hard times these past few years, so I’m proud of how far the girls have come and that I’ve been a part of it,” Weber said.
The day was a celebration of the seniors, and Weber took a moment to recognize the captains, Christina Brunette and Maria Ringo.
“It’s been great to celebrate these seniors, especially our captains Christina and Maria,” Weber said. “The team was fired up and ready to put on a show for the fans.”
As a team captain. Brunette, shared her experience with the sport.
“It’s been so cool to come here,” she said. “I was a swimmer when I first came in, so to learn a new sport and see how far I’ve come is so impressive to me.”
Brunette also talked about her experience in the boat for the RMU Duals.
“Today was great to get on the boat with the team,” Brunette said. “I changed positions. Usually, I’m in the third seat, but today I got to be first. It was a change for me, but it was fun to learn.”
Brunette also discussed the main difference between the positions in the boat.
“When you’re in the third seat, you are keeping the pace with the team. When you’re in first, you are setting the pace.”
Brunette’s hard work and determination throughout her time on the team were evident, and she is a true testament to the resilience of the Robert Morris rowing team.
The seniors may be leaving the team, but their impact on the program will be felt for years to come.
Overall, it was a day filled with joy and celebration, as the Robert Morris rowing team came together to honor their seniors.
“I’m proud of these seniors and all they’ve accomplished. It’s been an honor to be a part of their journey, and I can’t wait to see what they do next,” Weber said.
