Softball Roundup: District Invite Day One

RMU fell to the hands of the Spartans Sunday in their final game of the weekend in the Sunshine State.

George Washington 5 (3-5), RMU 4 (2-12): Robert Morris began play in the District Invite Friday afternoon when they took on George Washington in Washington, D.C. The Colonials used a three run fourth inning to take a 3-1 lead over their opponent. However, George Washington forced the game to extra innings in the bottom of the seventh inning when they tied the game at 3 on a RBI-double to left field. Freshman Abrielle McCartney gave the Colonials a 4-3 lead in the ninth inning with her third RBI of the contest but a 2-RBI double by George Washington in their bottom half of the ninth inning ended the game in walk-off fashion. Freshman pitcher Kaitlin Ellzy fell to 2-5 on the season. Ellzy went 8.2 innings, giving up five runs on seven hits. The freshman pitcher also struck out five opposing batters and walked four. McCartney led RMU offensively with three hits and three RBI’s.
