Struggling Colonials look for first win against La Salle Explorers

The Robert Morris men’s soccer team (0-5-1) has yet to win a game, but that could change this Saturday as they face off against La Salle University (2-3) at 1 p.m. Robert Morris goes into the game coming off a stunning overtime loss to Bucknell on Wednesday. A win against a struggling squad could be just what the Colonials need to get on track.

The La Salle Explorers currently have a 2-3 record, but have had offensive hiccups as of late. The Explorers’ last goal came on Sept. 1 when they beat Iona 2-1. Since then, the Explorers have been shut out in their last three games. When the Explorers do have the offense rolling though, the attack is led by junior Pat McCarthy and sophomore Soji Olatoye.

The Colonials, on the other hand, have been sliding downhill since the start of the season, but that isn’t really as bad as it sounds. Though the first three games saw RMU get shut out, the last four games have all been one-goal contests, including a draw against St. Bonaventure. They’ve come close, but it seems the Colonials just can’t find their offense when they need it most. However, the offense came through in the clutch against Bucknell with the tying goal scored by sophomore Oeyvind Skjesol to send the game to overtime.

If the Colonials can channel that sense of urgent offense again against La Salle, the rest of the season may be brighter than previously assumed. Seniors Zac Sherman and Owen Pearce spearhead the Colonial offense as Sherman leads the team in points with 7 and Pearce is not far behind him with 4. At this point in the season, if the Colonials can find their offensive touch, look for them to make a splash as this year’s campaign continues.
