It was announced last Friday that the National Lacrosse League (NLL) would be changing its league structure for the upcoming 2023-2024 season. On Tuesday, the information was finally released on what the changes would be.
The NLL announced via social media that they would be getting rid of the Eastern and Western conference system in favor of unified standings. In seasons prior, each conference would play 16 interconference games, with only two games being played out of conference. This year, with no conferences, the NLL will have each team play each other once for a total of 14 games. The other four games will be what the NLL is calling “flex” games. These flex games will be rivalry games, to ensure the old conference rivalries live on in this new format.
With this, the playoff structure will be changing as well. Under the old system, the top four teams in each conference would make the playoffs, always guaranteeing an East vs. West final. Now without conferences, it will simply be the top eight teams in the league qualifying for the playoffs.
In this playoff system, the one seed will play the eighth seed, the two will play the seven, the three will play the six, and the four will play the five, each in a single elimination game. Then the semi-finals will be reseeded so the highest remaining seed will play the lowest remaining seed in a best of three. The finals remain untouched with the last two teams playing in a best of three.
