MOON TOWNSHIP – The Robert Morris women’s basketball team defeated the Wright State Raiders 74-53 Wednesday night to extend their win streak to four in a row, establishing its longest conference winning streak since joining the Horizon League.
This game was of incredibly important for both sides, who each had slow starts to the season but have picked up their level of play in the past few weeks.
The story of the first quarter was graduate forward, Mya Murray, who had eight points on four shots in the opening frame. RMU widened their lead with a 10-point run in the second quarter fueled by Katelyn Chomko hitting two 3-pointers off the bench. and they went into halftime with a 13 point lead over the Raiders.
The Colonials continued their high level of play into the second half, where the defense stepped up, allowing the Raiders to convert on only 25% of their shot attempts.
The Colonial play on the boards was top notch, as Wright State didn’t get their first offensive rebound until the 3rd quarter, and was limited to only seven in the first half. RMU’s interior presence, specifically Mya Murray and Raissa Nsabua, overwhelmed the Raiders’ forwards and bigs.
Murray scored 16 points on 66% shooting from the field, also grabbing six rebounds as she continues to fill in nicely for the injured Danielle Vuletich.
“[Mya] has been fantastic,” head coach Chandler McCabe said. “We tell her all the time that when she wants to score, she scores.”
Junior Katelyn Chomko became the Colonials’ microwave scorer off the bench, scoring a quick nine points on three 3-pointers, finishing with an efficient 12 points on 80% from the field and from 3.
The Colonials have won four straight games against Horizon League opponents since joining the Horizon League in 2020, including winning their last three by double digits. Today’s 21 point win was the largest margin of victory in conference since February 2023.
RMU will take on the Purdue-Fort Wayne Mastodon at home Friday night. The Mastodons are currently 11-0 in Horizon League play, and will prove to be a tough task for the Colonials.
“The girls are ready for that matchup,” McCabe said. “We won every quarter but the second quarter [in their last matchup]. We know that and they know that as well.”
The RMU Colonials Women’s Basketball team will be back at the UPMC Events Center on Friday, January 31. Tip off is at 7 p.m.
