MOON TOWNSHIP– Coming off a win just two days ago over Charleston, the Colonials looked to get another home win against the Fairmont State Fighting Falcons.
Despite many fouls and turnovers on both sides, Robert Morris women’s basketball was able to pull away late and win by a score of 66-55.
Fairmont State came into tonight’s game, averaging just over 82 points per game. The Colonials did an excellent job early on defense, holding the Falcons to just 13 points in the first quarter.
However, the Colonials could not gain a sizable early lead despite out-rebounding Fairmont State 11 to four in the second quarter.
A good chunk of early RMU offense came from Danielle Vuletich, who came off a career-high night in both points and rebounds against Charleston. She had six of RMU’s 14 first-quarter points and finished the night with her second straight double-double.
Rebounds were a big night theme as the Colonials nearly doubled the Falcons in that category, finishing with 43 compared to FSU’s 24. Vuletich led all players with ten and added two blocks.
Despite committing 23 turnovers themselves, the Falcons continued to stay in the game due to the similarly high amount of Colonial turnovers. RMU finished with 26 turnovers, including 11 in the second quarter.
After halftime, RMU found their offensive groove, shooting 57 percent in the third frame and extending their lead to as many as 11 points. The Colonials finished the night shooting just over 48 percent from the floor.
Head coach Charlie Buscaglia could go much deeper into his bench in this game as the production from his depth players continued throughout the night. All ten players that got minutes scored at least two points, with three Colonials finishing in double figures.
In the fourth quarter, RMU led by as much as 15 after a Paris Kirk layup. From there, the Colonials could keep Fairmont State at bay and make their free throws when they needed to to secure the win.
With the win, RMU moves to 5-6 overall. The Colonials get a well-earned 11-day holiday break before returning to action on Dec. 29 against the IUPUI Jaguars at the UPMC Events Center.
