The RMU women’s hockey team pulled off a 6-2 victory against the Toronto Aeros in its first, and only, exhibition match of their 2013-14 season.

Senior Thea Imbrogno recorded a tally halfway through the first period (8:19) with her first goal of the night. The assistant captain netted another nearly two minutes later (10:11) with assists by junior Maddie Collias and sophomore Megan Eady.

With 40 seconds left in the first period, Toronto’s Lauren Wildfang was sent to the box for checking.

On the ensuing powerplay, the puck was passed from freshman Mikaela Lowater to Collias, then finally to junior Rebecca Vint who found the back of the net to put the Colonials up 2-0.

After establishing a strong presence on the ice in the first period, one lone goal was scored toward the end of the second period. Imbrogno registered her third goal of the game at 18:05 on another powerplay.

“It’s a line effort,” the forward said of her hat-trick.  “I’m happy with how my line played, and with all the mixing up that we’ve been doing in preseason, it’s nice to have some sort of connection with your line.”

Toronto came alive late with a goal 1:10 into the final period. But a minute later, Collias had her first goal of the afternoon with an assist from Vint.

Merely seconds after Collias’s tally, freshman Maeve Garvey lit the lamp for the Colonials at the 2:50 mark with assists from Howard and captain Kristen Richards.

“I just tried to work as hard as I could and things happen as they happen,” said Garvey.  “I just stick to my game and work as hard as I can.  If a goal comes along, then that’s great.”

The Aeros made their second, and final score at 19:06.

The Colonials were charged with eight penalties over the course of three periods, but managed to kill off six. The team also scored two powerplay goals on five chances.

All three goaltenders made an appearance in net on the evening, with Courtney Vinet leading in minutes with 30:50.

“It was good to get our feet wet a bit,” said Garvey of the win. “A lot of us haven’t played a game in a while, so it was good to sort of get back into the groove and the season starts next Friday, so we’re looking forward to that.”

The team begins regular season play this Friday against RPI at the 84 Lumber Arena. The puck drops at 7:05 p.m.

“It’s always nice to come out with a win for your first game; everyone’s just so excited to play,” said Imbrogno. “But you don’t let it get to your head. We’re just excited to come into next weekend and play RPI.”
