MOON TOWNSHIP– Starting the season undefeated and entering their conference portion of the schedule, the RMU women’s soccer undefeated streak ended this past Thursday with their conference opener ending in defeat to Purdue Fort Wayne.
In their second conference game Robert Morris, (7-1-2, 1-1 conference) welcomed Green Bay (0-6-2, 0-2 conference). After defeat in their last outing, the Colonials made up for it today knocking off Green Bay, 5-1.
RMU had much to be happy about from this performance as they were completely dominant from the start of the whistle and played hard for all 90 minutes. Two goals inside the first 15 minutes for the Colonials jump-started their afternoon and from that moment they didn’t look back.
Head coach Chris Shaw spoke about what the early start does for his team.
“It’s one thing we have talked about with this team. In the past, I think we’ve had a tendency if we got an early goal to take out foot off the gas.” Coach Shaw said. “At the end of the day we want to score goals, we want to play an attacking style of soccer and I think that’s what you got today.”
The attacking style of soccer came into play today as the Colonials fired off 18 total shots with 12 of them being on target. Along with the shot totals, RMU was able to control the pace of play and the possession stats, as they held 59% of the possession this afternoon.
Four different Colonials found the back of the net. Sophomore Malia Kearns scored twice in the win with other goals from Renae Mohrbacher, Kaoru Hayashi and Haleigh Finale.
Robert Morris played free-flowing type of play when they can go from the back line to the midfield to attacking seamlessly is the Colonials’ goal and today RMU was able to control that for the most part.
“It’s one of those things where I think we need to do a little bit better job at the back of being composed, but once we get the ball into the midfield, we are pretty good.” coach Shaw said. “I thought we transitioned well from defending to attacking.”
Playing a perfect 90 minutes of clean soccer is hard to do. RMU had one lapse in concentration and unfortunately, that cost them the clean sheet today as Green Bay scored their lone goal of the match in the 87th minute.
“I thought there was a little bit of a breakdown in midfield. Again, it’s just a little bit of complacency because of the score line and we’re the extra man up. You start to think we got the extra man here so I don’t have to put in a shift here and then you get exposed.” Coach Shaw said.
The Colonials will look to build on this performance going forward as they keep facing Horizon League opponents.
RMU will be back in action for a Horizon League matchup vs. Milwaukee this Thursday, Sept. 21 kickoff set for 8 p.m.
