It may be only one game into the season, but RMU women’s soccer has already picked up their first two awards of the year.
Following their major win against Le Moyne Sunday afternoon, freshman attacker Madison Hurst and junior defender Emerson Johngarlo picked up the Horizon League’s Offensive and Defensive players of the Week respectively.
Hurst provided two assists in her collegiate debut. But while it was RMU’s first look at the freshman, head coach Michelle Rick wasn’t surprised with the forward’s contribution.
“She was here through the spring, so she got to work with the team through the spring and start finding chemistry with the group,” Rick said. “That was excellent, and you can see it on the field immediately.”
While Hurst got the attacking award, it was defender Johngarlo who provided the goals, scoring her first two career goals against the Dolphins while also providing a clean sheet at the back.
“I’ve never gotten in on corners before because I play center back, so I’m always just holding back,” Johngarlo said. “Getting in the box and finishing. It was all really fun.”
RMU will look to carry this success into their Thursday matchup against Southern Indiana. That match will take place at 8 p.m. in Evansville.
