The Robert Morris volleyball team returns home to the UPMC Event Center on Saturday to host Canisius and Duquesne in the Chick-fil-A Robinson Labor Day Volleyball Classic for the second year.
The Colonials opened their season with a trip to Delaware last weekend for the Blue Hen Invitational, in which they went 1-2. Loyola (MD) and Delaware defeated them, both three sets to one. Robert Morris took down Niagara, also three sets to one.
One of the major bright spots from the Colonials’ opening weekend of action was freshman Natalie Stepanovich. Across three games, she posted 39 kills and 33 digs. The Ohio native also collected six aces and is currently tied for second in the Horizon League.
Stepanovich was not alone in having an impressive opening weekend, as Abby Ryan posted similar stats with 38 kills and 25 digs.
Rosina Esposito and Hillarie Adams significantly impacted the offensive side by having 30 and 18 kills respectively.
Allena Carmody was a force for the Colonials on the defensive side, collecting a team-leading 47 digs. Kaitlyn Brown and Ashleigh Wallin also impacted the Colonials’ defense, as they had 24 and 19 digs respectively.
Canisius comes into town with a record of 2-1, with victories over Saint Frances and Belmont. Duquesne is also off to a 2-1 start on their season, defeating Saint Peter’s and Merrimack. The Golden Griffins’ lone loss so far in the young season came at the hands of Youngstown, whereas Binghamton took down Duquesne.
Robert Morris is 4-1 all-time against Canisius, while they are 5-12 all-time versus Duquesne. The Colonials will be looking for a repeat of last year’s Labor Day Classic, in which they went 2-0 knocking off Duquesne and Canisius.
Robert Morris is set to take on Canisius at 11 a.m. and then Duquesne at 6 p.m. on Saturday.
