Allegheny County Police have confirmed that a Pittsburgh police officer has shot and killed a suspect from an incident the night prior.
On the evening of February 5. Allegheny County Police Officers responded to a call from the Oak Hill Apartments in Terrace Village shortly after 5 P.m. A security guard called, reporting that the suspect had pointed a gun at him while he was doing his rounds around the apartment.
Shortly after the incident was reported, the suspect fled the scene. Officers then made contact with the suspect on Bentley Drive and Devilliers Street. By this time, nearly a dozen Police Officers were pursuing the suspect. He was finally found hidden behind a dumpster at a local Family Dollar.
According to CBS News, Allegheny County Police Department Superintendent Christopher Kearns went on record and said, “While behind the dumpster, numerous officers gave him commands to drop the weapon to come out and surrender peacefully. The man did not listen to those commands. He came out from behind the dumpster with the weapon and advanced on officers.”
One officer fired at the suspect. Officers then administered aid on the scene. The suspect was transported to Mercy Hospital where he was pronounced dead shortly after.
The suspect’s identity has not been released and the Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s Office will be identifying the suspect. The officer who was involved in the fatal shooting has been placed on leave, in accordance with the Pittsburgh Police Department.
