Matt Gergely was a state representative for the 35th legislative district, first being elected on February 7, 2023. He tragically passed away on Sunday, January 19, 2025, after suffering a medical emergency on New Year’s Eve. He proudly gave his life to serving the families of Allegheny County, and especially his hometown of McKeesport.
He served his hometown of McKeesport, Pennsylvania for years before being elected, holding numerous financial and local government positions, including being chief of staff for McKeesport Mayor Michael Cherepko.
Although his time in the House was short-lived, he did not fail to make a difference. In his time in the house, he sponsored legislation that allowed businesses certified to serve liquor more flexibility to help their hiring, along with improving testing of blood plasma.
Josh Shapiro released a statement stating, “Lori and I are heartbroken for Rep. Matt Gergely’s wife Holly, their two young sons, his colleagues on both sides of the aisle, and the community he loved and proudly served in his hometown of McKeesport. Matt’s was a life cut way too short. Now, in this moment of mourning, let us come together to honor his legacy, carry on the work that mattered most to him, and look out for his family. In honor of his legacy of service, I’ve ordered flags on Commonwealth facilities, public buildings, and grounds to be lowered to half-staff. May the memory of Matt Gergely forever be a blessing.”
Along with Shapiro’s statement, both sides of the Pennsylvania House expressed their condolences for Gergely’s passing. After his passing, the House was left deadlocked with 101 on the Republican side and 101 on the Democratic side. An emergency election will be held in March to find a replacement for the representative.
