Roaring Away
This time last week I was traveling to Philadelphia at attend my first PRSSA conference. On Friday, a mixer was held for all the students to attend and get to know each other. The other students and I dressed up and headed downstairs to the Millennium Ballroom, which was transformed into the Ivy Lee Club. The theme of the mixer was the Roaring 20’s.The room was decked out in red, black and white. Music of that time was blaring while students performed the Charleston.Looking around the room I couldn’t help but hope that one day I would be able to plan an event like this.
Students were dressed in various ways, ranging from chapter t-shirts to full on flapper costumes. Just seeing how they were dressed foreshadowed what my competition was going to be like in this industry. Even just walking around the room and hearing snippets of their conversations opened my eyes to how serious some chapters are. Because of our size, or lack there of, Robert Morris is unable to have an official chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America. Despite our official status, I believe the students of our major can very well compete with the other schools. Besides, great things come in small packages.
Attending the mixer instilled a sense of excitement for my time in Philadelphia. Feeling the passion in the ballroom was more contagious than any sickness. I knew come tomorrow morning all of the flappers and gentleman would casts the boas and fedoras away in exchange for suits and skirts.
