“Saw X” was released on Sept. 29, 2023, and achieved major success at the box office and among fans. Almost immediately, a sequel, “Saw XI,” was announced and set for release in 2024. However, as 2024 progressed with little news about “Saw XI,” it was eventually revealed that the sequel had been pushed back to 2025.
Reports indicate that the creative process and potential storyline for “Saw XI” were completed by early spring 2024. Since then, the screenwriters and creative team have received no further updates on the project. Screenwriter Patrick Melton told The Hollywood Reporter:
“It’s stalled at a managerial level. It has nothing to do with the creative or anything else. There are higher-level things at play.”
“Saw XI” was reportedly planned as a commentary on the U.S. healthcare industry, similar to “Saw VI,” but with a modern twist. Additional complications arose in December 2024, when Brian Thompson, CEO of UnitedHealthcare, was killed. With internal struggles among higher-ups, rumors of the franchise being sold, and the unexpected death of a healthcare executive, the film was officially put on hold.
In March 2025, Lionsgate confirmed that development on “Saw XI” had stalled. Speculation remains that the franchise may be sold to another company or possibly rebooted entirely. With Tobin Bell, the longtime face of Jigsaw, now 82, Lionsgate may opt to restart the series with a new lead.
No official decisions have been made, and fans await further updates on the future of the “Saw” franchise.
