The National Transportation Security Board (NTSB) has ordered for 68 bridges spanning across 19 states to be inspected.
This recommendation comes after the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, Maryland in 2024. The Key Bridge collapsed after being struck by the containership Dali. At the time of the collapse, the bridge was almost 30 times above the acceptable risk threshold for critical and essential bridges.
The NTSB found that if the Key Bridge had been inspected by the Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA), then MDTA would have been aware that the bridge was so far above the acceptable threshold, and could have taken the necessary steps to reinforce the bridge.
It has been reported that out of the 68 bridges, none of them are at immediate risk of collapsing. Even though there are no bridges in imminent danger, the NTSB made it clear that these bridges were built after new protocols came into place and have not undergone any type of vulnerability tests, so the levels of risk of collapse from a vessel strike are unknown.
