Emergency services were deployed in Arlington, VA. on Wednesday night as an Army Blackhawk helicopter collided with a passenger aircraft, causing the aircraft to crash into the Potomac River.
Camera footage shows the two aircraft colliding, followed by an explosion and a scatter of debris.
The crash occurred near Reagan International Airport, where a grounding order has since been put in effect.
The plane, a PSA Airlines Bombardier CRJ700, was carrying approximately 60 passengers, and was flying into RIA from Wichita, Kansas. Kansas senator Roger Marshall stated on X: “Today, we received devastating news of what can only be described as nothing short of a nightmare.”
The Pentagon has also released a statement that there were 3 army personnel on board, standard for a helicopter of that size. No senior personnel were in the crash.
There is an unknown number of casualties or injuries in the crash, Federal Aviation Administration chairman Ted Cruz has stated on X, “We know that there are fatalities.”
President Trump has been briefed on the incident, and Vice President J.D. Vance has issued a statement on X calling for prayers for the people involved in the crash.
Not much is known about the reasoning behind the accident, but it comes just a few days after President Trump fired the head of the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), and Coast Guard, and dissolved the Aviation Security Advisory Committee.
More developments will come in overnight and for the next few days as the Department of Transportation continues to monitor the situation.
